(Updated Version)It was a typical school day.As I was about to step in to the school, Gok Seng and his gang said in a singing voice, " Joseph, the book worm. He is so supid..." Everyone around me laughed at the funny song Gok Seng made up. My face was red with embarassement. I fastened my steps adn walked into the school.
As usual, I was listening attentively in class answering every question the teacher asked. As time ticked by, I felt something poking me. I turned around and saw my classmate, Gok Seng staring at me. " What do you want?"I asked. "Can't you see I'm busy?"
" Hey, Book worm want to have a sniff of this? " Gok Seng replied. Thats strange, Gok Seng never talk to me like that. No one does. He must be up to some kind of mischief again. I looked down at a tube which was labelled, Glue.
" No thanks. Don't you know that sniffing glue is illegal?" I said in a harsh tone.
" Aww... Are you scared, Book worm?" Gok Seng challenged me.
I felt angry as I had enough of the names people called me. I'm sick of it. But should I sniff it? After much hesistation, I had decided. " Says who?" I retorted. I felt happy taking up the challenge and letting Gok Seng knows I am not a coward.I snatched the tube of glue and began to sniff it. A sense of sensation flows into my body. It made me feels so high! For the rest of the lesson, I was not paying attention. But wanting to sniff more.
After lesson, I begged Gok Seng to let me sniff it again. Day by day, it was the same routine. Going to school with only one aim: To sniff glue. Little did I know, I was addicted to it.
Worse still, I played traunt. I pretended to go to school but in fact I'm going out with Gok Seng to the collector's place. That place was very eerie. In there, there is a long queue of people. When it is my turn, a man in black said," One tube, $10." I fished out my wallet and gave him $10. I opened the cap of the tube with anxiety and began to sniff. It is so wonderful. It made me forget all my worries.
"Choices have consequences ." The day when I had to face the music came.Mr Tan, my teacher was puzzled by the number of days I was absent and called up my mother. My mother was shocked to hear that I was absent when I left home wearing the school uniform and carrying a bag going to school. She immediately called me.
" Where are you now?" Mother asked.
" In school." I replied sharply.
The truth hitted my mother really hard. I was lying to her.
Night came. I came home at about 10. I was drained out of energy. My mother was seating at the couch. "Why did you came home so late?" She nagged.
" Doing project!" I repiled loudly.
" Liar! Your teacher told me that you are not present in school for more than a week. Where did you go in these days?" She continued.
I turned around and glared at her and ran back to my only refuge. My bedroom.
The next day, I went to school and Mr Tan questioned me why I was absent for many days. I ignored him. Just as he was going to reprimand me, the tube of glue dropped out of my pocket. I tried to pick that up but Mr Tan reach to it faster than me. " Joseph Lee! Are you sniffing glue?" Mr Tan blasted to my ears.
I nodded. I felt regretful. Mr Tan called for the police. The police arrived promptly in five minutes. My parents were at the scene. They were very disapointed. Before I leave, I beg the officer to let me say something to my parents. He allowed.
" Mum, Dad, I'm sorry." I said with sorrow as tears rolled down my rosy cheeks. "I swear that I will never sniff glue again. "
As the saying goes," Once bitten, twice shy."
