(Updated Version)" Mum, can I go hiking with my friends?" I asked showing the innocent face to my mother. I always did that when I wanted something. Katie and Timmy are waiting outside of our rented house in Australia with my dog, Spike.
" No. Its dangerous."Mum replied without looking at me.
"Please?" I said.
Mum looked at me and with much hesitation, she finally agreed. " Yes! Thanks Mum. I'll be back before dinner!" I exclaimed with joy. I ran up to my room and get all my tools for hiking. As fast as a strike of lightning, I ran past my mother and ran straight to the door.
" Alright! We will first go to the famous Lake Amadeus!" I shouted to my friends.
"Woof!" Spike barked with excitement as we walked towards the Salty Lake.
My friends and I were walking down the rocky steps when we saw somtehing floating in the river. It was brown in colour and it seems very old. Out of cruiosity, I stepped forward and took a closer look. What could it be?
Its a chest!
" Guys! Look what I had just found! A chest! Timmy, I need your help!" I shouted loudly with joy. Timmy went forward and helped me to carry the box up the shore.
" 1,2,3. Up!" Timmy barked. The chest is heavy. Very heavy. The gold and shinny brass lock attracted Katie's attention. Sweat started to pepper Timmy and mine forehead. The weather is getting warmer as time ticked by.
"Its so shinny." Katie said dreamingly. Timmy picked up a rock and smashed it at the shinny lock.
Creak! The gigantic chest opened. As the bravest in the trio I took a peek. What greeted me is the best thin I had ever seen.
It is so shinny. Who could think that these are hidden in this chest? "What is it?" Katie said impatiently.
" Coins! Coins from the olden days! Hidden in this chest!" I shouted with joy."But there are only a few. About ten." Timmy and Katie hurried and open the chest bigger to only see the shinning gleamingly new coins. Katie picked up one to see.
" 1756... These coins are made in the year 1756! We are rich!" Katie exclaimed. Just as Katie was about to take some coins and put it in her pocket, Timmy stopped her.
" Sister, these does not belongs to us.Put it back." Timmy said.
" Who cares? Finders keepers." Katie replied harshly. Suddenly, a aound came behind the bushes. Ssss... What was that? I ordered everyone to quieten down.
" Who's there?" I said. Two sinister man came out. They have huge torsos and tattoos on their broad arms.
" Give me the money!" One of them said sharply.
" Never!" Timmy shouted though he was afraid.
"Hmmm! You dare not?" He replied. He gave us a look that could melted steel. Just then, Spike ran forward and bit him. His partner grabbed Spike and tossed him aside.
" Spike!" We shouted in fear.
" That should teach you a lesson, stupid dog!" He said. Poor Spike. He is groaning in pain. I felt helpless. Really helpless. I can't even save my own dog. Tears welled up on my eyes. A flow of anger flowed in my body.
" How could you do that? He is my dog! How could you call him stupid?" I roared for the first time in my life. The siblings were taken aback by my voice. I never roar like this. The men were shocked too. Out of anger, I picked up a rock and tossed it to the man who threw Spike. Blood gushed ou of his gaping wound.
" Vincent! What are you doing?" Katie screamed at ther top of her voice. It was her voice that saved me from doing anymore silly things. What have I done? I injure someone.
"Ahhh... You brat! You will pay for this!" His voice rang up in the stale, musty air. A few second passed. He moves no more. Timmy imediately fished out his mobile phone and called for help. The other man was shocked that his partner was dead.
" Brats! I will have my revenge!" He said. He dissapeared into thin air in a split second. I ran to Spike and put him in my arms. Tears rolled down my cheeks and reached the red fur of Spike. Katie and Timmy came forward and comfort me.
The police arrived promptly within ten minutes. Timmy narrated the story to the poicemen and Spike was sent to the hospital. The coins we found were kept by the police for further investigations. The police told us that they were bandits in this area and said that I had to be sent to the boys home in Singapore for one week for killing that bandit. I was given a lighter sentnce as I am a child and killed him for special reasons.
Our parents were informed. Two days later, after fighting to survive in the hospice, Spike died. That was the saddest day of my life. I will always remember this puppy who saved my life. As for the other men who assault us, the police founded him in the town and caught him. The coins were dedicated to the museum of Sydney and was named, " Spike's coins."
Thank you, Spike.
