Uniquely Singapore
The reason why I have chosen this picture is because it truly depicts or portrayed the “kiasu-ism” of Singaporeans. Singaporeans are known to have these three personalities. Kia si, Kia su, Kia boh. All of these three terms are in Hokkien. They have the meaning of scared to die, scared to lose and scared of wife respectively. Nowadays, Singaporeans are getting much more Kia su. For an instance, babies that have only just learn how to crawl are forced to learn basic math, English and Mother Tongue. In my opinion, the idea of getting a baby learning all of these is crazy. They have not even learnt how to walk yet their parents registered them to attend these lessons. Can you imagine in the middle of the lesson, the whole class full of crawling babies starts to crawl and cry for their mothers? That is totally insane. But what can they do? It is the nature of adult Singaporeans to make sure that their child will get the best. This is like disrupting the natural development for a baby. After all, what can those babies learn? They could not even walk or learn how to understand English or Mother Tongue. There is only one language that they are capable of saying and understanding- baby language. Therefore, this case is the cons of kiasu-ism. However, everything have their pros and cons. This case is the disadvantages of kaisu-ism.
There are advantages for kiasu-ism too. For an example, the Great Singapore Sales. That is one crazy event that all Singaporeans, especially the females, are crazy about. If you step inside a mall during the period of the Great Singapore Sales, you will be probably be squeezed by other customers. Tourists will see that when there are discounts for expensive products like Chanel, Lois Vuitton. Dolce and Gabana, Singaporeans will chiong all the way to the shops where the discounted branded good are places even if it means being squeezed or getting elbowed by other customers. Although there will be injuries or bruises, you will still get your branded goods if you are fast enough. Looking at your branded goods makes you feel triumph and proud that you are one of the most kiasu and fast customers. That shows that Singaporeans will give everything they have to get something or to reach their goal. If one were to take a photograph of that particular scene, he or she would laugh at it. This shows to me that not only does kiasu-ism brings you the feeling of triumph or gets you the discounted goods, it can still bring laughter to people from all walks of life or from different countries.
I am proud to be a Singaporean. In my opinion, kaisu-ism is uniquely for Singaporeans as there is no other country in the world that can be compared to our thick skin methods to get our discounted goods and making sure our kids have the best education before they can even walk. That is, what I call a true Singaporean that I can safely and confidently bet that no other countries are parallel to us
NICE NOT? :P
I love Singapore
